Pairing wine with food is suddenly easy with Butlers on your side. This is a shop where you can go in, describe what you’re going to be eating — and the friendly and knowledgeable staff will find you something delicious (and within your budget) to go with it. Many of the wines featured come from smaller-scale producers, and some from lesser-known regions, including the Sussex Downs. There is also an impressive range of beers. An eclectic list of spirits include Japanese malt whisky, Cuban rum and Mexican Mezcal.
Butlers started as a family-run wine shop in nearby Queens Park in 1979. Today, under second generation Henry Butler, the business has this second shop in Kemptown, an online store – and their vans zig-zag across Brighton, supplying restaurants and bars.
Their themed wine tasting events (check their website for dates) are fun, informative and non-snobbish — and as a consequence, are often sold out.
