For a clue to the concept behind Portland, look up to the sign with the big ‘P’ which hangs above this light and friendly new venture in Kemptown Village: Coffee, Food, Goods. And although Kemptown Insider has listed it under ‘Café’, its creators see it more as ‘a shop with food.’ So as well as an impressive range of drinks, sandwiches and pastries, the longterm idea is to combine the food and drink with a selling space for carefully chosen goods – and the owners say they’re open to local producers who might be interested. It’s also a welcoming workspace – with old Sussex school desks re-purposed as surprisingly comfortable tables and staff who are happy to let you take your time. A basement area downstairs can be rented. Coffee is by award-winning Brighton roasters Small Batch, sandwiches freshly made to order — and dogs very welcome. It also has to be said the loo at the back is possibly the prettiest shop or café convenience in the district.
