For many, the joy of having the Real Patisserie in Kemptown is almost a reason in itself to live in this part of Brighton. This branch of the successful city-wide business has its own in-store bakery and the aroma of freshly baked bread, croissants and pain au chocolats wafting into Kemptown Village is hard to resist. Breads include classic baguettes and (thinner) ficelles, sourdough, spelt and rye loaves. The illuminated glass counters also display a mouthwatering range of generously-sized savoury snacks and sandwiches, including Croque Monsieur made with brie, bacon and maple syrup, or quiches with chorizo, sweet potato, chilli and basil. A separate counter has a magical array of patisserie and fruit tarts.
If you can’t wait to get your purchase home before devouring it, there’s a long wooden table where you can settle in with a cup of tea or coffee from the counter and eat in. Unsurprisingly, queues can start to form at busy times but the welcoming and efficient staff are more than up to it and service is helpful and friendly. The Real Patisserie also produces cakes, elaborate patisserie, canapés and party food to order. Details of menus and how to order can be found on their website.
