A great new addition to Kemptown’s restaurant scene: Woodbox Pizza have transformed what used to be Sam’s Bistro into an airy, relaxed space with superb pizzas, starters, salads and desserts. The pizza expertise should be no surprise: the guys behind Woodbox have mastered the art over several years of operating the successful vintage Citroen Woodbox Pizza Van. Pizzas at the restaurant are cooked in the attractive domed wood-fired oven at the back of the open kitchen. Seating ranges from a big table in the window (a must-have if you’re here with a group) to smaller tables or sociable stools overlooking the kitchen. There are also a couple of tables on the pavement outside. There’s a clever smattering of local ingredients throughout the menu: you can drink Sussex Blackdown Gin while tucking into a pizza topped with delicious, spicy chorizo-style Nduja sausage made at Northiam, East Sussex. Save room — if you possibly can — for the very good desserts.
