The light and friendly interior of Bell & Fox is a treasure-trove of beautifully-crafted leather handbags and accessories, jewellery reimagined from vintage elements – and soft sleepwear with Indian block print patterns. Although designer and company founder Sarah is a Kemptown resident and the shop a welcome addition to the ‘village’ part of St George’s road, Bell & Fox and their understated ampersand logo already have a well-established global profile through their website. Materials and the ethics of production are as important as the quality and functionality of the Bell & Fox designs: their bags and other leather designs are made at two overseas workshops that also produce for top catwalk names – and Bell & Fox say they audit constantly to ensure safe working conditions and fair wages — and only use tanneries that conform to the industry’s REACH standards. Jewellery is by Brighton-based designer Jemma French for the eco-conscious independent brand Toba – and the organic cotton sleepwear and washbags are designed by London-based Dilli Grey and handprinted in Jaipur. This is a shop you won’t want to hurry through – and the mid-morning opening time makes for a perfect browse after a Kemptown coffee. Bell & Fox also host occasional workshops: see Kemptown Insider’s weekly listings, or Bell & Fox’s own events page for details.
