Brighton – let alone Kemptown – is fortunate to have Bramptons. The traditional and expert butcher’s shop has been Sussex Butcher of the Year twice and has been nominated again already for this year. The window display is enough to have you reaching for your cookbook shelf – and almost all of the cuts of Beef, Lamb and Pork you see are from local Sussex farms. The team are really knowledgeable about all aspects of preparing and cooking the meat and are ready to advise on anything complicated. But they are equally happy making up the smallest of individual orders: it’s a friendly neighbourhood institution and there’s been a butcher’s here since 1873. Bramptons’ own sausages are delicious — and if it’s barbecue weather (or even if it isn’t) ask about their fantastic lamb burgers.
