For many, the joy of having this baked-on-the-premises-bakery in Kemptown is almost a reason in itself to live in this part of Brighton. The Open Bakery is run by one branch of the family which started the highly successful city-wide Real Patisserie – and while the alluring displays of breads, pastries and patisserie include many Real Pat favourites, there are are also innovative originals here, including delicious focaccia. Breads include classic baguettes and chewy brown and rye loaves. The illuminated glass counters also display a mouthwatering range of generously-sized savoury snacks and sandwiches, including Croque Monsieur and quiches A separate counter has a magical array of patisserie and fruit tarts.
If you can’t wait to get your purchase home before devouring it, there’s a long wooden table where you can settle in with a cup of tea or coffee from the counter and eat in. Unsurprisingly, queues can start to form at busy times but the welcoming and efficient staff are more than up to it and service is helpful and friendly. The Open Bakery produces cakes, elaborate patisserie, canapés and party food to order. There are also bread-making classes which book up quickly.
